Maheshwar was revived from obscurity by the Holkar Queen, Rani Ahilyabai of Indore, in the late 18th century and was formerly known as Mahishmati. Most temples and the forts of this riverside town date back to about the same time. Principal sights include the fort which is now a museum displaying heirlooms and relics of the Holkar dynasty, the three ghats lining the banks of Narmada river, and many tiered temples distinguished by their overwhelming balconies and intricately worked doorways. Maheshwar is known for unique weave and beautifully complex patterns of the sarees throughout the country.

How to Reach
       Maheshwar is best reached by road as the nearest railhead is 39 km away. Local bus services to Barwaha (30 km) and Dhar (70 km) are available. Both of which, in turn, can be reached by local bus from Indore (46 km and 56 km respectively).

A word about Indore City
        Indore is a textile town on the banks of the rivers Sarasvati and Khan, and is the largest city in Madhya Pradesh. It is situated at an altitude of 567 m and it's population size is 1.1 million. It's cotton textile industry is the fourth largest in India. It is also famous for it's bangles, and is a notable centre of Hindustani Classical Music. The older part of the town is on western side of the railway line, the newer part on the east.

Season
        During summers, one can see the temperatures vary between 22 and 40 degrees celcius. In winter maximum temperature vary between 10 and 29 degrees celcius. Period between October and March is the best time to visit Indore. It receives an annual rainfall of 1,050 mm.
